The kink and leather communities have long been foundational to queer liberation, yet they are frequently pushed to the margins. Much like Ballroom culture, whose slang, gestures, and aesthetics are routinely adopted without honoring their roots. Kink subcultures are often neglected or sanitized despite laying the groundwork for how we navigate consent, autonomy, and identity. These alternative spaces have always been essential for queer people to find their voices, practice deep trust, and forge true collective belonging.
During this talk, we listen and learn from kink and ballroom experts on what it means to find your voice within a queer subculture. Together, we’ll explore the liberation of finding your people and strategies for protecting community spaces. How can we engage with these cultures without being extractive?
